CLICKBURYPARK
The clickburypark project came to life as a result of a community initiative
led by a handful of individuals living in the Bury Park area of Luton.
These people strongly believed that the Internet and communications technology
could and should be better used in their disadvantaged neighbourhood to
empower local citizens by making it easier for people to access information
on public and voluntary services and community organisations whilst at
the same time, acquiring skills which would help them to bridge the digital
divide.
The cornerstone of the project will be a state-of-the-art community Web
portal with highly interactive features which will make it easy for almost
anyone (with minimal training) to maintain different parts of the site
for and on behalf of the community.
By carefully documenting our progress, using video, photographic and printed
media, we also hope to create a blueprint, which can be used as a highly
cost effective model for similar wired communities both in Luton and elsewhere
in the UK.
We envisage that clickBuryPark will be a true community project in every
imaginable sense of the word. Following initial infrastructure development,
it will be built, maintained and sustained by local individuals, community
groups and companies.
Besides creating a community portal to offer a vital link to information
and advice on local organisations, services and cultural issues, it will
also play a key role in up-skilling local people and helping to alleviate
many social problems, including isolation among women, drugs abuse and
youth unemployment.
More than anything, our vision is about using ICT as part of the general
drive to alleviate poverty and bridge the digital divide in one of Britain’s
most underprivileged communities.
